LASAIR, THE first public exhibition by third year students from the GMIT's BA in contemporary art programme, will be officially launched next week by the Galway international Arts Festival's artistic director, Paul Fahy.
Lasair means ‘spark’ in Irish, and according to the exhibition co-ordinator Deirdre O’Mahony, who is also a lecturer and practising artist, it "reflects the way creative ideas are generated" by the Irish and international students on the programme, and "was chosen to coincide with Seachtain na Gaeilge”. It will feature textiles, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and painting.
“This is a first step in the students’ professional lives, where their work is presented to the general public in an exhibition promoted, installed and managed by them as part of a module in Professional Practice in the new BACA programme," says O’Mahony. GMIT student Marc Craddock addds: “It’s something many of us have never done before, so it’s a momentous occasion, being the first showing of our personal work in a public space. We couldn’t be more excited to be working on this project."
The exhibition opening is Thursday March 15 at 6pm in the New Foyer space, GMIT, Dublin Road. It is open to the public and all are welcome. Exhibition opening times are March 16, 20, 21, and 22 from 11am to 5pm.
