Huun-Huur-Tu - Tuvan music @ Róisín Dubh

Traditional music and song from the Russian-Mongolian border

IT PROMISES to be one of the most exciting, and utterly different, musical events to come to Galway in many years, when the extraordinary tradition of Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing will be heard on the stage of the Róisín Dubh.

Huun-Huur-Tu, from Tuva, a republic of the Russian Federation, situated along the border with Mongolia, play the Róisín on Wednesday March 14 at 8pm.

Their most distinctive characteristic is throat singing, in which they sing both the note (drone ) and the drone's overtone(s ), thus producing two or three notes simultaneously. The overtone may sound like a flute, whistle or bird, but is solely a product of the human voice. They primarily use native Tuvan instruments such as the igil khomus (jaw harp ), doshpuluur, and dünggür (shaman drum ). More recently, they have begun to selectively incorporate Western instruments, such as the guitar, and musical forms, such as electronica as well.

Huun Huur Tu has collaborated with Frank Zappa, The Chieftains, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, the Kodo Drummers, The Moscow Art Trio, The Kronos Quartet, and Bulgarian women's singing group, Angelite. They recorded the album Eternal with underground electronic musician, Carmen Rizzo; and appear on three songs on the debut album by New York blues band Hazmut Modine. Huun Huur Tu's song 'Osku Urug' is featured on the Fargo episode, 'The Law of Vacant Places'.

Tickets are available from www.roisindubh.net; the Ticket Desk at OMG Zhivago, Shop Street; and The Róisín Dubh.
