Hurlers to open league with home tie against Antrim

After the massive and historic high of winning the All-Ireland senior hurling title last September for the first time in 29 years – it is back to brass tacks for Micheal Donoghue and his squad this Sunday when they entertain Antrim at Pearse Stadium (1pm ) in the first round of the league.

Galway will hurl in 1B of the league this spring with twin aims - primarily to achieve promotion to 1A for 2019, and to blood some new players for the upcoming championship.

Galway will be expected to account for Antrim with some ease, even allowing for their late return to collective training. It will be an opportunity for the management team to try out a few fringe players to see how they blend in with the team and squad.

The following week the hurlers are away to Limerick on Saturday February 3, and that round two game under lights is a contest which will tell us a bit more about where the team is in their ambition to return to the top division.

As Sunday is the team’s first home game since their 0-26 to 2-17 All-Ireland win over Waterford, there should be a good home crowd in attendance to give them a cheer and allow supporters to rock up and see some of their heroes on home soil.
