LOUIS DE PAOR, one of the country’s leading poets in the Irish language, will read at the North Beach Poetry Nights in The Crane on Monday at 9pm.
Born in Cork in 1961, Louis has been involved with the contemporary renaissance of poetry in Irish since 1980 when he was first published in Innti which he subsequently edited.
A four-times winner of the Seán Ó Ríordáin/Oireachtas Award, the premier award for a new collection of poems in Irish, he is also the recipient of the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award 2000, the first poet in Irish to achieve that distinction.
A bilingual collection, Ag gReadadh Bas Sa Reilig/Clapping In The Cemetery, was published by Cló Iar-Chonnachta in 2005. A second bilingual volume, Agus Rud Eile De/And Another Thing, will be published later this year.
There will also be a two-round Slam. Participants should bring two three-minute poems (preferably memorised ). The winner goes forward to the 2009 North Beach Poetry Nights’ Grand Slam in December.
Admission is €5/3. The next North Beach Poetry Night is on April 20 with music journalist and former Horslips drummer Eamon Carr.
