Councillor calls for urgent meeting after stray horse incident

A collision between a stray horse and a motor vehicle on the N84 Headford Road on Monday morning has led to calls for an emergency special meeting of the Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District Council.

According to Independent county councillor James Charity, who has called for the emergency meeting to take place tomorrow, this is “the second time in two weeks” there has been a collision “between a loose horse and a car on the N84”.

He said in such incidents, a “multiplicity of agencies” become involved, but he accused the Galway county and city councils, the Department of Agriculture, and An Garda Sìochana of “promising action” but instead “nothing happening”.

“It is not good enough for one to simply keep passing the buck to another,” said Cllr Charity. “They need to come together and act before there is a fatality or serious injury on this road, and the condition some of these poor animals are in without any fodder or shelter is nothing short of appalling. I expect the council to give this issue priority and take action.”
