Strong New Year start for Moycullen's Super League team

Moycullen Super League men's basketballers will be in confident form to welcome Tralee Warriors to NUIG’s Kingfisher Arena for Saturday's league fixture (7pm ).

Fresh from a weekend to remember when they bagged a second consecutive road win, and the U20s knocked out defending champions Neptune in the National Cup semi-final, Moycullen will be in buoyant form for this home fixture.

Moycullen, now level on points with UCC Demons and Belfast Star in mid table, enjoyed a good start against DCU Saints in Glasnevin last weekend, establishing a 10-point lead.

While the margin stretched to as much as 14, the majority of the contest saw only single digits between what were two evenly matched teams.

Saints found much of their success through their inside players, Martines Provisors and Dee Proby, but Moycullen were able to exploit Saints’ lack of mobility.

Much like the previous weekend’s road victory over UCC Demons, Moycullen never relinquished their early lead, and excellent guard play from Patrick Lyons and James Loughnane propelled the Connemara men to victory.

There were some nervy moments late on when a Saints' run cut the deficit to two points with less than two minutes remaining.

However baskets from Lyons, Loughnane and Brandon McGuire in the closing stages were enough to see Moycullen pick up a big win to start 2018.

Moycullen: Brandon McGuire 31, Paul Freeman 24, Patrick Lyons 13, James Loughnane 9, Stephen Tummon 4, Kyle Cunningham 3, Cian Nihill 2, Joseph Tummon 2, Dylan Cunningham 2, James Lyons, Paul Kelly.
