BETH ORTON, the British singer-songwriter, who has collaborated with such diverse artists as William Orbit, Bert Jansch, Johnny Marr and Nick Cave, and whose music ranges from electronica to folk, is coming to Galway.
Beth Orton plays the Róisín Dubh on Monday February 5 at 8pm, where she will be playing music from across her 20+ year career, one which the Sydney Morning Herald called "fascinating and inventive, reshaping our expectations constantly".
She began by singing on William Orbit's chillout project Strange Cargo, then provided vocals on two songs on the Chemical Brothers' Exit Planet Dust. When her 1996 breakout album, Trailer Park, was released, it balanced, as Pitchfork said, "plaintive acoustic guitars and barroom piano with trip-hop beats and atmospheric electronic detailing...On subsequent albums she progressively dialled back the electronics, and her last full-length, 2012's starkly acoustic Sugaring Season, wrapped itself snugly in the warm, homespun, mantle of folksingers like Nick Drake and Sandy Denny".
Her most recent album, 2016's Kidsticks saw her return to more electronic pastures, by collaborating with Andrew Hung of experimental electronic noise band F**k Buttons. Hailed as a triumph, it was described by Music OMH as “comfortably among the best things she’s ever done", while Pitchfork called it "the riskiest album of her career. And she sounds like she's had the time of her life making it, too".
