Galway Community College to hold open day for incoming first years

Galway Community College will hold a first year open day on Friday December 8 between 3pm and 4pm, and the team would be delighted to welcome incoming students and their parents/guardians for a tour of the state of the art facilities.

GCC has been serving the educational needs of the city’s Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students for 48 years. The college is continually improving its facilities and evolving to meet the needs of all learners.

Students have access to a fully equipped gymnasium, a staffed library, two engineering rooms, two construction rooms, a home economics room, six computer suites with broadband and WiFi access, lunch facilities, media rooms, and many subject based classrooms. GCC is proud to have seven former students among its teaching staff.

The vocational ethos of the school is upheld by providing the broadest range of subjects right through to Leaving Certificate, with a strong emphasis on both academic and vocational skills. Every class in the school has a tutor and each year has a year head, delivering a caring environment for all students.

An all-round education is valued and while academic success is recognised and encouraged so too are the areas of spiritual and physical development of the students. Two full time PE teachers provide for a wide range of sport, and the school recently expanded this to include kayaking on Lough Atalia.

Last year former GCC student Coilin Hernon won second place at the National Engineering & Technology Teachers Association Awards in Letterkenny.

As part of his Higher Level engineering project he was required to design a Sikorsky helicopter. He received an A1 and finished second out of 5,000 students. He is currently studying engineering in NUIG.
