Anti-apartheid striker to speak in Galway

STRIKING BACK - The Untold Story of an Anti-Apartheid Striker by Mary Manning, will be launched in Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop at 6.30pm this evening.

The book details the events of the famous Dunnes Stores strike, where nine workers who refused to handle South African produce in the store, went on strike for nearly three years during the 1980s. Both Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela acknowledged the importance of the workers’ stance in highlighting the injustices of the Apartheid regime and Mandela himself came to Dublin to thank the strikers personally after his release from prison.

Ex-striker Mary Manning will be present and the guest speaker is Independent Galway West TD Catherine Connolly. All are welcome.
