Rusangano Family - Róisín Dubh and all-ages show

Award winning African-Irish hip hop trio to hold music workshop for teens in Nun’s Island Theatre

WHAT A year it has been for the Rusangano Family - winning the Choice Music Prize for Best Album with their debut, Let the Dead Bury The Dead; playing the Luminato, Shambala, and Electric Picnic festivals; and releasing the singles ‘I Know You Know’ and ‘Tea In A Pot’.

The band will be returning to the studio to work on their second album, but before that, they bring 2017 to a close with a four date tour of Ireland, including two shows in Galway.

On Friday December 8, the Limerick based Rusangano Family - MCs God Knows and mynameisjOhn, and DJ Murli - hold a free workshop for teenagers and play an all ages gig in the Nun’s Island Theatre; while at 8pm they play the Róisín Dubh.

Taking their name from a Zimbabwean word for “togetherness”, and hailing from Zimbabwe, Togo, and Clare - none of them hip-hop strongholds - the band have emerged as one of the most interesting and creative in Ireland today. Their bass led music, featuring skewed soul samples, 808 beats, and sliced-up breaks, owes little to genre cliches and style restrictions, but instead is a template for exploring themes of cultural heritage, identity, and belonging.

Support is from Jonen Dekay. Tickets are available at www.roisindubh.net, the Ticket Desk at OMG Zhivago, Shop Street, and The Róisín Dubh.

Workshop for teens with Rusangano Family

The workshop, for those aged from 12 to 17, does not require any experience. It will explore artistic expression in hip hop, rap, and electronica. The aim is to build awareness and respect of cultural diversity through music. Interaction and collaboration between members of the group is encouraged.

The workshop and gig is limited to 40 places so booking is essential. It runs from 4pm to 5.30pm. To attend email [email protected] or call 091 - 565886. It is supported by the Roisín Dubh and Galway City Council. See www.rusanganofamily.com
