ONE OF Galway's most exciting young bands, The Clockworks, landed in Toronto this week, having been selected as one of only a couple of Irish bands to play at Canada's Indie Week.
The band - James McGregor (vocals/guitar ), Seán Connelly (guitar ), Damian Greaney (drums ), and Tom Freeman (bass ) - accompanied by their sound engineer, Karl Healy, will play three shows in Canada's largest city, where they will be competing for the much coveted title of 'Best of the Fest'. The Galway quartet are one of only a small number of Irish bands selected to play Canada's Indie Week, which is a music festival and industry conference which features more than 250 bands over six nights in 20 of the city's leading venues.
Inspired by The Libertines, The Clash, and The Smiths, the trio's stripped down sound features tight, taut, rhythms; sharp guitar riffs, a sense of atmosphere, and intelligent lyrics, as heard on the singles 'Mazda' and 'Girls Like You'. The band have played Electric Picnic, Dublin's Workman Club, and Whelan's, as well as shows in London. Hot Press said: "You'll be hearing a lot more about The Clockworks"; The Last Mixed Tape praised their "street-level sound...with gritty guitars, pin-point drumming, and wryly observational lyrics"; while Outcast magazine listed them as "Ireland's next big thing".
