Transport Minister Noel Dempsey must base some of the taxi regulatory staff in the Galway region rather than basing them all in Dublin.
This is the view of Green Cllr Niall Ó Brolcháin, who said Minister Dempsey has “agreed to give serious consideration to this proposal”.
He also called on the Minister to raise the standards of cars that are allowed to be taxis. “That someone can head down to the council,” said Cllr Ó Brolcháin, “and buy a taxi plate for their old banger is patently ridiculous.”
The issues of taxis was also raised at the recent Green Party national convention in Wexford. The Green’s Galway City East candidate James Hope called on the party to introduce legislation to allow for local authorities to regulate taxi licences, in full consultation with all relevant stakeholders. The motion won near unanimous backing at the convention.
