Former Equality chief to speak in NUIG tonight

Will issues of equality and the rights of minorities take a back seat in Ireland because of the recession? Or will they become more important?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed in Promoting Equality in a Time of Crisis, a public lecture to be given in NUI, Galway tonight at 7pm in the Siobhan McKenna lecture theatre, in the Arts Millennium building.

The guest speaker will be Niall Crowley, former CEO of the Equality Authority. He will speak about the critical issues facing the equality agenda and what the future holds for the rights of marginalised groups in light of the current economic, political, and social climate.

The panel will also include Galway West TD Michael D Higgins; Donncha O’ Connell from the School of Law; and Dr Vinodh Jaichand from the Irish Centre for Human Rights NUIG.

There will also be representatives from Community Platform, Action for Equality, and issue based community groups and organisations. The meeting is being hosted by NUIG’s Development Education and Research Network.
