Remembering Connemara journalist Nollaig Ó Gadhra

A collection of essays celebrating the life and work of Nollaig Ó Gadhra, journalist, lecturer, historian and activist, will be launched tomorrow Friday September 29 in the Connemara Coast Hotel in Furbo by Junior Minister Seán Kyne TD.

Mr Ó Gadhra was originally from Co. Limerick but lived most of his life in the Connemara Gaeltacht. He worked with RTÉ, the Irish-language newspaper Inniu, Fáilte an Iarthair and Gaeltarra Éireann, before taking a post as a lecturer with the Regional Technical College, Galway.

The collection, Nollaig Ó Gadhra: Cuimhní Cairde , edited by RTÉ RnaG broadcaster Máirín Ní Ghadhra, Nollaig’s daughter, includes essays by twenty of his close friends and acquaintances including Ronnie O’Gorman, founder and chairman of the Galway Advertiser, Éamon Ó Cuív, T.D., Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, historian Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Pádhraic Ó Ciardha from TG4 and many others.

They share their memories of Nollaig Ó Gadhra, giving an affectionate yet unvarnished account not only of the man but touching on some of the major historical events that occurred during his lifetime.

Nollaig was an activist for the Irish-language also and the revival of the language and he spent time as the President of the Irish League (Conradh na Gaeilge ). He spent much of his life battling illness and died before his time in August, 2008. He is survived by his wife and their three children.

Nollaig Ó Gadhra: Cuimhní Cairde will be launched in the Connemara Coast Hotel in the Aran Suite bar on Friday, 29 September, 2017 at 7.00 pm.
