Big names for Galway Jazz Festival 2017

Arve Henriksen, Haz'art Trio, Trondheim Voices, and Simon Nabatov

MAJOR JAZZ names such as Arve Henriksen and the Haz'art Trio, among others, play the 2017 Galway Jazz Festival, which runs from Thursday October 5 to Sunday 8.

On Thursday 5, the Trondheim Voices perform in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church. This all female ensemble of improvising vocalists have been constantly challenging and changing the framework for how a vocal ensemble can produce sound art since 2001.

In the Mick Lally Theatre on Friday 6, the Haz'art Trio play. Through bass, drums, and oud, they mix jazz beats and maqam arabesques, crossing all stylistic boundaries. Sunday afternoon sees Moscow born, New York educated, and long-time Cologne resident, pianist Simon Nabatov bringing his trio to Loam. An extraordinarily virtuosic player with a dazzling technique and huge physical presence, expect him to push the Steinway piano to its limits.

Later that evening, in the Mick Lally Theatre, the festival welcomes a genuine jazz superstar. More likely seen in the Royal Festival Hall or The Lincoln Centre, Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen makes his Galway debut in a duo with percussionist Terje Isungst.
