Tomorrow is deadline for Fuel Allowance applications

Tomorrow is the deadline for applications for the Government’s Fuel Allowance scheme, and a local councillor is urging eligible Galwegians to apply.

Sinn Féin Galway City West councillor Cathal Ó Conchúir said that while applications for the October lump sum payment have to be submitted by September 15, those who miss the deadline will continue to be paid the allowance of €22.50 on a weekly basis as per usual.

The councillor also pointed out that a person may qualify for a Fuel Allowance if they are receiving any of a range of payments directly from the Department of Social Protection.

“For the 2017 Fuel Season people in receipt of the Fuel Allowance can opt to receive payments in two lump sums – one in October and the second in January,” said Cllr Ó Conchúir. “Presently the value of the lump sums is set at €292.50 each but the rate of the allowance could change in the budget so the January payment could be in excess of that.”
