DANCER JEAN Butler and cellist Neil Martin are set to engage in what The New Yorker called "an intense, affectionate, sometimes flirtatious musical conversation" when they perform their show, This Is An Irish Dance, in Galway.
Irish-American dancer of Riverdance fame Jean Butler, and cellist-composer Neil Martin, will be in The Black Box Theatre on Friday September 29 at 8pm for the opening show of Music for Galway’s 37th International Concert Season, Let's Dance.
This Is An Irish Dance, choreographed by Butler, with music composed by Martin, is a duet for dancer and cellist, exploring the interplay between dancer and musician in live performance. The movement and music created simultaneously through improvisation questions who is leading and who is following, and highlighting intimate interactions between body and instrument, cello and cellist, cellist and dancer, and ultimately a man and woman.
Jean Butler has been called an extraordinary dancer, and the accent of her dancing is distinctly Irish” by The New Yorker. She is best known for originating the principal female role in Riverdance. She has since devised and performed in numerous choreographies.
Neil Martin is from Belfast and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Palazzo Vecchio. In 2014, Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D Higgins, invited Neil to perform, arrange, and conduct music for a concert at the Royal Albert Hall to mark his historic State visit to Britain.
