Networking event for charities and community groups

Charities and community organisations in the city and county are invited to attend a networking event which will take place on Thursday September 21 at the Raheen Woods Hotel, Athenry, from 7pm to 9pm.

The event is being organised by Volunteer Galway and The Wheel, the organisation which supports and represents community, voluntary and charitable groups.

Information will be provided on the evening on EU funding opportunities currently available to Irish civil society organisations, including the Europe for Citizens Programme, which provides funding for activities, such as town twinning and advocacy initiatives.

The event will also outline some of the current issues affecting the Irish community and voluntary sector and detail the services available from The Wheel, which includes workshops, webinars, sector updates, expert advice on regulation, data protection, funding and cost-cutting measures.

The evening is being organised as part of a Regional Support Partnership that has been agreed by Volunteer Galway and The Wheel, to build on their work assisting local community organisations to get the supports they need and to have their voices heard locally, regionally, and nationally.

“Since Volunteer Galway was established in 2006, we have had the privilege of working with a broad spectrum of organisations and groups who have an extremely valuable impact in Galway,” says Donncha Foley, the development manager with Volunteer Galway.

“We realised that most organisations find it difficult to access training or support to build their ability to grow and develop even further. We hope that our new partnership with The Wheel, and any initiatives that come out of it, will have a long lasting impact. Many organisations have similar challenges, and this is a new space to develop ways of addressing these challenges, by supporting each other, but also by providing a focal point for the delivery of other supports such as training and information exchange.”

Since 2006 Volunteer Galway (Galway Volunteer Centre ) has supported members of the public to find suitable volunteer roles in Galway city and county through selecting roles on its daily updated list of volunteer opportunities that it advertises on behalf of Galway based non-profit and community organisations.

The Wheel is a support and representative body connecting community, voluntary organisations and charities across Ireland. Established in 1999, it has evolved to become a resource centre and forum for the community and voluntary sector.
