The Mayor of the Claddagh talk

The Claddagh fishing village was a unique settlement which developed outside the walls of medieval Galway which traditionally elected its own mayor, or king.

In 1820, the historian James Hardiman wrote that the Claddagh, "From time immemorial has been ruled by one of their own body, periodically elected, who is dignified with the title of mayor, [who] regulates the community according to their own peculiar laws and customs."

On Saturday September 2, NUIG historian Dr John Cunningham will discuss the role of the mayor of the Claddagh during the 19th century.

This free talk will take place at Galway City Museum at 2.30pm.
