Croí na Gaillimhe will hold its biannual registration morning on Tuesday September 12 from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
Croí na Gaillimhe, a resource centre of St Vincent de Paul, continues to develop as a centre of considerable significance socially and educationally for the people of Galway city and county. Located at 1 Mill Street, virtually in the heart of Galway, the centre offers courses, clubs, and programmes in a variety of topics as well as acting as an information hub for accessing useful information and resources. Croí na Gaillimhe is run by a highly motivated and enthusiastic team of staff and volunteers. The warmth of the welcome extended to all who visit or use the services of Croí na Gaillimhe is renowned and its popularity as a city resource centre is evident from the growing numbers of course participants.
Computer training – beginners to intermediate (includes laptops, tablets, smartphones ): It is never too late to learn — computer training starts at the very beginning with basic keyboard and mouse skills, how to search the internet efficiently, sending/receiving email, storing, sorting, and sharing photos, booking tickets, and how to bank online.
Art: In this class students begin with fundamental elements of drawing and progress to confident painting still life pictorial and abstract formats. The class is very relaxed, informative, and intuitive sessions offer the perfect setting for easy learning.
Dancing: Always a very popular class, reacquaint yourself with those steps you loved or learn some new moves, this a class you will always look forward to.
Creative writing: This very popular class develops your writing skills or gives you the basic tools to get started, it is interesting and relaxed, just go along, you will enjoy.
Siel-bleu exercise programme: An exercise programme specifically for older people; its focus is on promotion of healthy, active, ageing. The exercise programme is largely chair based and can be replicated at home. It has a very positive effect on participants' physical and mental wellbeing.
Lunch and social club: The lunch and social club for older people meets every Wednesday. Lunch is the reason for getting together but the club is about much more than a meal, members speak about enjoying the opportunity to meet and catch up with friends, making new friends, getting involved in activities, and enjoying the workshops and talks. It works to reduce isolation, increase confidence, and build a community spirit.
Croí na Gaillimhe celebrates festivals that honour age throughout the year, eg, Bealtaine and Positive Ageing Week, as well as traditional festivals such as Christmas and Easter. The age group is 55 and upwards and new members are welcome. There is a wide variety of activities for all cultures, a knitting club, men’s group, singing group, basketball, and an intergenerational group (older and younger people ). Croí na Gaillimhe is looking for older people to participate in the intergenerational project and men to get involved in tai chi.
