Applications are now being accepted for Our Lady's College QQI Level 5 award in childcare. The course will commence this September in the college's Newtownsmith campus and is designed to facilitate learners who wish to care for young children in a variety of settings or who wish to pursue further studies.
The carefully selected course modules cover a variety of interesting topics including child development, play, and nutrition, as well as the legal and safety aspects of working with young children. In addition to the QQI Level 5 award, students are also offered certification in food hygiene and occupational first aid. Work experience plays a vital role in the course and takes place one day a week throughout the year.
Learners who successfully complete the Level 5 early childhood care and education major award will have many specialised opportunities available to them. Professional routes include working in pre-school centres, crèches, after school clubs, childcare residential centres, and as special needs assistants and childminding/nannies. Learners may also pursue further studies to Level 6 in various institutes of technology such as AIT and Sligo IT.
