People were urged this week to attend UHG’s emergency department only in the case of “real emergencies”.
The call came as the facility reported being “extremely busy”. There were 33 patients awaiting admission to the hospital on Wednesday.
Management at the hospital advised people who are attending the ED to expect delays.
In a statement, it apologised to patients and their families for these delays and pointed out that the full capacity protocol has been implemented. It added that every effort continues to be made to identify patients who are appropriate for discharge.
“We would like to remind the public that we encourage them to attend the emergency department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP out-of-hours service in the first instance.”
