Top tips for keeping your home in great nick this summer

'Home is where the heart is' they say, so take good care of it. Summer is one of the best times to get stuck in and make sure your house is in the best possible condition. While you might think to yourself that everything needs to be fixed or cleaned, here are some areas Advertiser.ie has picked out that you can focus on.

Get rid of mould

Mould is a real scourge when trying to keep your home in good shape. It can get everywhere and can creep up slowly and unexpectedly until it covers entire surfaces. The mould can get inside or outside the house, especially with the humidity in summer time, but often it is not too difficult to remove.

You can stop the problem at source by reducing moisture in your house. Be consistent when cleaning your bathrooms and keep them as dry as possible by not leaving wet clothes lying around and drying shower curtains. Keep windows open when showering and let air circulate through the house and carry the moisture outside.

If you already have mould though, there are plenty of cleaning products you can use. The classic bleach solution is always a good bet, mix with water and apply to the affected area using a sponge. You can pick up mould sprays that offer an alternative to bleach and are just as effective too.

Get some painting done

A fresh coat of paint will give your house that radiant shine it may just be crying out for. There's a better chance during the summer that the weather will be good and you can spend more time painting.

Why not change the colour of your house and give it a completely new look? If you do not want to go that far and a good freshening up is always in order.

If you do not feel like doing it yourself, there are plenty of contractors that are available to do the job at a competitive price.

Clean your attic

Over time your attic can get very cluttered and if you don't arrest the build up, it will only get messier. Get some help and get up there and clear it out, whether it be old children's toys, old clothes, old school books or frankly anything old, it is best just to get rid of it if you do not need it.

Unwanted items might not be the only things that you need to get out of your attic, there might be pest, mould and water leakage that needs to be taken care of. If you do not feel confident in doing this yourself, get a professional to do it.

Wash your windows

A lot of the time windows do not get washed as often as they should. Get out your squeegee, cloth, and a bucket of soapy water and get scrubbing. Window cleaning is actually an enjoyable endeavour when you get stuck into it and there is something very rewarding about being able to see your reflection in all your windows when you are finished.
