Galway-based company nominated for data science award

Galway-based company Orreco, which has worked with Olympic athletes and elite professional sports teams around the world, has recently been nominated for the prestigious DatSci Awards.

The awards, organised by the National Centre for Applied Data Analytics, were created to celebrate the best of data science talent in Ireland, as well as to bring the Irish and international data science community closer together.

Orreco uses machine intelligence to find hidden signals in data including GPS and performance statistics to help improve athletic performance and reduce the incidence of illness and injury. Its scientists have led the science of biomarkers as drivers of athletic performance and, more recently, Orreco data scientists have led new approaches to mining, modelling and getting meaning from a wide variety of team and athlete data sets. The company has profiled more than 2,000 athletes, including Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks, NBA player Wilson Chandler of the Denver Nuggets, and pro golfers Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed.

Speaking about the nomination, Dr Brian Moore, Orreco CEO, said it was great to have DatSci recognise the impact Orreco’s analytics and machine learning solutions are having on elite sports.

“In future these solutions will be available to amateur athletes, helping us all to prepare for our next sporting event, just like an Olympian or a pro-basketball player.”

In February this city-based sports and data science company up-scaled its operations in Galway and the United States following investment from Silicon Valley-based venture firm True Ventures.

As a result it is continuing to grow its team of experts in Galway, with current vacancies on the development team and upcoming data science and data engineering vacancies. Successful candidates will help develop solutions, and uncover insights from data for teams and athletes in the Premier League, NBA, PGA Tour and Major League Baseball.

Orreco has been nominated for best use of data science in an SME. The winners of the DatSci Awards will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on September 21.
