Salthill Devon 3
St Catherine’s (Dublin ) 0
Salthill Devon Ladies, backboned by seven of last year’s victorious u-16 squad, enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Dubliners St Catherine’s in Drom on Saturday in the WFAI Intermediate Cup quarter-finals.
From the start Salthill dominated matters with Meabh De Burca and Ruth Fahy bossing the central mid field exchanges, while wings Julie-Ann Russell and Lucy Hannon enjoyed total control. Although the Dubliners were game, they never really threatened the resolute Salthill rearguard of Aine Hannon, Becky Walsh, Emer Flatley, and Daga Zolty. Niki Cullina in goal had a quiet day, but dealt with everything that came her way.
Salthill opened the scoring on 20 minutes when a great pass from Richael O’Brien got Russell in behind the back four and she calmy slid the ball past the advancing Dublin keeper. Although there was no further scoring in the half, Salthill were under no pressure. The introduction of Ann Marie McDonough gave the home team added zest down the left wing and despite many chances it took till 15 minutes from the end for the second goal, when a great through ball from Anna McGrath found her attacking partner O’Brien on the edge of the box and she curled a beauty into the corner.
Jenny O’Mahony was introduced and her willingness to close down and get up and down her wing was a feature. As full time approached Emer Flatley finished the scoring when she scored direct from a corner.
A good all-round performance and Salthill Devon can look forward to the semi-final draw.
