More than €460,000 allocated by Minister Kyne to improve road network on Galway's islands

Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, Seán Kyne has allocated more than €460,000 for the improvement works on Galway’s islands.

The funding is part of an overall allocation of some €868,000 for islands off four counties – Galway, Mayo, Cork, and Sligo. Further funding will be allocated shortly for Donegal’s islands.

Minister of State Kyne said, "I am delighted to allocate this funding of €462,679 for investment in the road networks of Galway’s islands which represents an increase of 88 per cent on last year’s allocation for Galway. The investment includes €181,500 for improvements to two main roads on Inis Mór, covering 2.9 kilometres, and builds on the €246,000 I allocated for the Aran Islands last autumn.

"As part of this year’s funding I have allocated €281,179 for Inisbofin which will fund improvements to 16 roads across the island.

"This significant funding allocation for Galway will enable the county council to carry out improvement works on the road networks of the islands benefiting residents and visitors alike.

"The allocation from my department, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, will cover three-quarters of the cost of the improvement works with the remaining quarter being funded by the county councils."
