City council launches local community festivals grants
The Galway City Council has announced its annual Local Community Festivals Grant Awards Scheme.
Local organisations planning events in their areas in the city in the coming months may be eligible for a grant under this scheme.
In previous years, small, local, festivals around the city have received support to involve and engage local people to contribute to a sense of community in old and new estates and areas.In 2016, events and festivals in Doughiska, Renmore, Tirellan, and Westside received funding.
A total fund of €8,000 is available this year and interested local groups are invited to apply. The application form is available from Galway City Council and on the web at http://www.galwaycity.ie/application-forms.
The form has been designed to be as simple as possible and includes the criteria that will be used for assessing eligibility.
Completed application forms should be returned by tomorrow Friday June 8 to the community and culture department of Galway City Council and decisions on grant-aid will be made in June 2017.
Old Galway Society bus tour to Sligo/Leitrim
The Old Galway Society will hold its the annual bus tour later this month, with a trip to Sligo and Leitrim including a visit and guided tour of Parkes Castle.
The tour takes place on Saturday June 17, departing from the cathedral car park at 10am and taking the normal route to Sligo and returning via Roscommon with stops in Tuam, Drumcliffe, Parkes Castle, and Roscommon.
The fare covers everything except lunch in Davis Yeats Tavern, Drumcliffe.

Call out for rose petals at Galway Cathedral
A Traditional Corpus Christi Procession will take place on Sunday June 18 in Galway City. The procession will begin with mass at the Abbey Church, St. Francis Street at 3pm.
As part of the procession, rose petals will be scattered to mark the occasion, Galway Cathedral are asking members of the public to donate rose petals for the procession. The petals can be dropped off at the Abbey Church or Cathedral on Sunday morning June 18.
The procession proceeds immediately after the mass celebration to the Poor Clare Monastery via the Salmon Weir Bridge. Finally the procession will conclude with Benediction at the Poor Clare Monastery.
All are welcome to attend however all children who wish to take part in the procession must be accompanied by a parent.

Bloom postcard garden for Portiuncula children’s ward
A postcard garden created by Jasmine Elkhershi from Longford town in collaboration with Shannon Orchard, which was on display at Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park Dublin last weekend, will be donated to St Therese’s Children’s Ward in Portiuncula, Ballinasloe.
The ‘Magic of Kindness’ garden created by Jasmine Elkhershi of Procrastimake in collaboration with Shannon Orchard is a magical fairy garden designed to communicate that there is a magic in kindness and that being kind to each other, ourselves, and the environment is great for our wellbeing.
The fairy décor is made, where possible, from recycled materials.
