Galway City Museum is among the winners of the 2017 Experts’ Choice Award from TripExpert, which recognises the best attractions around the world based on reviews by journalists and professional travel writers.
Less than two per cent of all attractions worldwide receive this award and the museum also took TripExpert’s Best of Galway award. Based in New York, TripExpert uses only professional reviews from travel guides, magazines, newspapers, and other respected sources.
The museum has enjoyed good reviews from Afar magazine, the Michelin Guide, and Lonely Planet. The Afar review said: “The absorbing Galway City Museum chronicles the region’s rich cultural and historical legacy. Exhibits span from prehistoric times to the present. Among the museum’s holdings are a 3,500-year-old ax and a full-size traditional sailing boat called a Galway hooker. A calendar of craft demonstrations and other special events rounds out offerings here.”
The museum’s latest exhibition is Sea Science - the Wild Atlantic, Ireland’s first sea science gallery to have audio and visual displays accessible in both English and Irish. The interactive exhibition look at how tides operate, multi-beam mapping, deep sea exploration, and marine life along the seashore. The Museum is open Tuesdays to Saturdays, from 10am to 5pm and Sundays, throughout the summer months, from 12 noon to 5pm. Admission is free.
