Cubbard calls for goalposts
City councillor Mike Cubbard is to lead a campaign to secure goalposts for city estates after he said that children are forced to play football on roadways.
He said that he has contacted the FAI to investigate a safe and secure way of providing these goalposts.
“I have met with many residents across the city who advise me that large numbers of children are playing sports and football in particular within their estates, many on the road as there are no goalposts on green areas. Having witnessed a number of estates having goalposts removed that were not authorised by the City Council, I have contacted the Council to look at finding an acceptable solution to addressing the issue,” he said. “I understand there are concerns over safety and insurance issues but these should not be factors we can’t overcome. I have also contacted the FAI and asked them to provide me with a guide to acceptable goalposts for housing estates and a costing on same. Once I receive this information I will then contact my colleagues in the Council and when we begin our budget deliberations later in the year I will propose we ring fence an amount for residents associations to apply for to have goal posts erected in a safe way which will further encourage the children across the city to part take in playing the beautiful game,” he concluded.
Gort na Coiribe burglary
Gardai in the city are investigating a burglary that took place in Gort na Coiribe last week.
In the early hours of May 18, three males were seen acting suspiciously around the time that a local house was burgled.
Gardai are asking anyone with information on the burglary or the dignity of the men to contact them at 091 538000.
Galway Carers Support Group fundraising dance
Galway Family Carers Support Group are holding a fundraising dance in the Menlo Park Hotel tomorrow night Friday May 26 at 10pm. Music by Tommy Flaherty and Francis Fahy. Admission is €8e and there will be spot-prizes galore on the night. All are welcome.
Proceeds will go towards the costs incurred running the group over the coming year. So any support you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Galway Carers Support Group hold meetings on the First Thursday of the month at 8pm in the Menlo Park Hotel. The group occasionally organizes speakers on issues affecting Family Carers ie. the ‘Fair Deal’.
Although the support group has been operating on a voluntary basis in Galway since 1987, Family Carers Ireland., www.familycarers.ie is a relatively new organization which came about by the merging of two former groups, ‘ The Carers Association’ and ‘Caring for Carers’.
The merged organization is sustainable and is in a better position to support, lobby and advocate on behalf of Ireland’s family carers. Since the merger all carers have access to a National Freephone Careline 1800-24-07-24.

Irish Deaf Society do not collect door to door, say gardai
Local gardai are encouraging people to be cautious in relation to bogus collections.
One recent collection that was brought to the attention of the gardai was one allegedly being carried out under the auspices of the Irish Deaf Society.
However, the society have confirmed to gardai that they do not collect door to door so people should not contribute to this and should contact gardai if they are approached by anyone purporting to be from the society.
