Free training for the unemployed is currently available in Shantalla through the Galway Family History Society West project. The overall aim of the project is to provide skills and related knowledge to further develop and to enable people obtain employment or further education.
The programme is a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI ) accredited course. QQI was previously known as the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC ). The course offered is a Level 3 in Employability Skills which prepares people gain skills and expertise to prepare for the workplace. Select computer related modules are also offered at Level 4.
These are delivered in conjunction with the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB ) in the form of what is called a Local Training Initiative. The modules covered at Level 3 range from the following: communications, career preparation, work experience, application of number, computer literacy, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet skills and personal effectiveness. level 4 modules include computer applications, information technology skills, data entry and business English.
Based in a recently-refurbished training room at St. Joseph’s Community Centre, Ashe Road, Shantalla, the course can accommodate 14 learners. Learners are taken on a continuous basis so vacancies can occur anytime. Anyone who is unemployed, registered on the live register, over 16 and under 65, at any level of literacy is eligible to participate.
Contact the Department of Social Protection or Local Employment Services offices to register for the course. Learners receive an allowance while on the course, the amount which is determined by the Department of Social Protection. The course welcomes people from all areas of the city and indeed county. There are currently vacancies at present on this course.
Others who have been on the course have been successful in gaining employment or further training. The benefits of the course include national Certification through QQI, learning or upgrading of skills, a re-entry route into the workplace and / or a chance to pursue new employment options, a chance to combine education with family, work and other responsibilities, an opportunity to meet new people, enhancement of self confidence, an opportunity to learn about sources available for family history / genealogy. However whilst the name suggests the Galway Family History Society West are a family history project certified training in the subject is not offered.
