Fine Gael to meet to finalise strategy for Galway City East

Fine Gael will hold a meeting tomorrow evening to finalise its vote management and election strategy for the Galway City East ward.

The party is running three candidates - Cllr Brian Walsh, Barra Nevin, and Frank Fahy - in this highly competitive six seat, which is also home to some of Galway city’s most prominent councillors.

The party is determined to hold onto the seat occupied by Cllr Walsh. Also, given Fianna Fáil’s slump in the polls, FG is keen to see if it can take two seats. This will be difficult as Labour is emerging as a strong party in the area and Fianna Fáil are far from out for the count.

It is understood that the three candidates will divide the ward into separate zones which each will canvass exclusively. Cllr Walsh will canvass Mervue, Renmore, and Ballybane. Mr Nevin will take Doughiska and Roscam. Mr Fahy will work Tirellan, Menlo, and Bóthar An Coiste.

They will then work a vote management strategy which will see each candidate seek the first preference vote from people in the area and ask for transfers to go to the other two.
