Spiccato Junction revisited

Máirtín O’Connor Band and ConTempo join forces once again

IN THE mid-Noughties, the enthusiastic, energetic fusion of Irish trad and classical by the combined forces of the Máirtín O’Connor Band and the ConTempo Quartet, was a thrilling sight in concert.

In 2007 both parties went into the studio and recorded and released the album, Spiccato Junction. A decade later, ConTempo, accordionist Máirtín O’Connor (Midnight Well, Reel Union, De Danann, Skylark ), fiddler and banjo player Cathal Hayden (Four Men and a Dog ), and multi-instrumentalist Garry O’Briain, revive the collaboration for a concert in the Town Hall Theatre on Thursday May 25 at 8pm.

The concert will feature Romanian folk dances, classical music, and Irish Trad. Original Spiccato Junction compositions, such as ‘The Bachs of Oranmore’ and ‘Locatelli's Trip to Lough Atalia’, are full of intensity and humour, and for this reunion concert, the group have also developed new compositions.

The concert is presented by The Galway Music Residency. Tickets are available form the Town Hall (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ). Early booking is advised. See also www.thegalwaymusicresidency.ie
