Ireland has possibly €5.4 trillion worth of oil lying off the west coast, but nothing is being done by the State to claim it or even stake a claim for it.
In light of this, an event has been organised in Galway to raise awareness of the issue. It’s A Gas Day takes place on Saturday from 3pm in the Galway Rowing Club. The theme of the event will be ‘The resources of Ireland belong to the people of Ireland’.
At 3.30pm there will be a verse-song-rap and cartoon workshop for children. At 4.30pm, there will be a celebration for International Women’s Day, featuring films on women in the struggle against the oil companies, such as The Bolivian Revolution: Enter the Oil Workers and Salt Of The Earth.
The main event will be a debate at 8pm, led by journalist Frank Connolly, entitled ‘Now is the time for the people of Ireland to take ownership and control of the natural resources (oil, gas, etc, ) from the multi-nationals
