AIMEZ-VOUS Brahms? Music for Galway’s 36th International Concert Season comes to a close with two events, one celebrating Brahms' music, the other looking at his most enigmatic aspect - his love life.
Violinists Elizabeth Cooney and Mairéad Hickey, viola players Simon Aspell and Ruth Gibson (Ensemble 360 ), cellists Guy Johnston (Aronowitz Ensemble ) and Brian O’Kane (Navarra Quartet ), will be in concert in the Emily Anderson Concert Hall, NUI Galway, on Thursday May 18 at 8pm.
They will play Brahms' reflective and exuberant Sextet No1 in Bb Op 18 and Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence, which combines Italian lyricism with Russian virtuosity. Both are among the most highly regarded in the string chamber music repertoire. Tickets are €20/16/6 from www.musicforgalway.ie, 091 - 705962, or Opus II, High Street.
On the same day, at 1.05pm, Gerry Murphy - who opened the season with the talk, Brahms: The Man, in September - will give a talk entitled Brahms: In Love, at Hotel Meyrick. Admission is free but there is a soup and sandwich special available for €7. To book call Music for Galway on 091 - 705962.
