Gardai prob fire at derelict hotel
Gardai in the city are investigating the fire which broke out at the derelict Corrib Great Southern Hotel on Monday.
The blaze was just the latest in a series of blazes at the hotel which has fallen into a state of disrepair in the last decade.
Garda Denise Kelleher at Galway Garda Station, who is investigating the incident, has asked any witnesses to this incident or anyone with information to contact Galway Garda station on 091 538000.
Walk, run, or jog the bypass for Tuam Cancer Care
Tuam Cancer Care is inviting everyone to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity to walk, jog or run the new Tuam Bypass before it officially opens to traffic. The charity has been selected by Direct Route Tuam and Roadbridge to host this event to raise much needed funds for the Centre.
The event will take place at 11am on Sunday, May 14 starting the Kilmore end of the bypass, near the Westwing Restaurant. The walk consists of a 4km and 8km route, which participants can walk, jog, or run.
To participate simply turn up on the day, registration opens at 10am, Registration is free but,donations are welcome. All are welcome. Ken Bruen nominated for award
Celebrated Galway crime author Ken Bruen has been nominated for an award for Pimp, the novel he co-wrote with Jason Starr, at this year’s CrimeFest Gala Awards.
Bruen and Starr have been nominated for The Last Laugh gong for the best humorous crime novel at the CrimeFest awards. They are up against John Dufresne for I Don’t Like Where This Is Going (Serpent’s Tail ); Judith Flanders for A Cast of Vultures (Allison & Busby ); Mick Herron for Real Tigers (John Murray ); Carl Hiaasen for Razor Girl (Little, Brown Book Group ); Vaseem Khan for The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown (Hodder & Stoughton ); LC Tyler for Cat Among the Herrings (Allison & Busby ); and Chris Whitaker for Tall Oaks (Twenty7 ).
The awards will be announced at the Crimefest Gala Awards Dinner which takes place in Bristol on May 21.
Burglary at ‘Boojum’ restaurant
Gardaí are investigating the break-in of the restaurant ‘Boojum’ on Spanish Parade on Sunday, April 30.
The restaurant was broken into on Sunday night. The front door was forced open, and a considerable amount of cash was taken.
Anyone with any information on the matter is asked to contact the Galway Garda Station on 091 538 000, where Detective Garda Jason Kelly is investigating the incident.
€8,200 Prize Fund for Milchem
Milchem Equestrian Centre which is owned by Ralph Conroy in Tynagh, Co. Galway will hold the final of their Show Jumping League on Sunday May 14.
The prize fund for this final is a fantastic €8,200 thanks to generous sponsorship.

‘Meet the Mobile Content Creators’ AT RTÉ Mojocon
As part of RTÉ Mojocon, the leading international media conference focusing on mobile journalism, mobile content creation, mobile photography and new technology taking place across Galway city from the May 4 - 6, Greasán na Meán will present ‘Meet the Mobile Content Creators’ this evening, 7.30pm at the Mick Lally Theatre.
This insightful event is one of six free Mojocon Fringe events open to all members of the public and is a must for anyone interested in mobile journalism, digital, and social media.
Headlining the seminar are pioneers of mobile and digital journalism; former BBC video journalist and mobile video expert Mark Egan; freelance journalist and reporter for German Snapchat news channel “Hochkant” (Funk ), Eva Schulz; BBC journalist and media trainer, Mark Settle; and Sumaiya Seedat, banker and wife of mobile trailblazer Yusuf Omar.
Managing director for the evening is Lorretta Ní Ghabhán, director and founder of award winning social media agency Lorg Media.
Attendees will be treated to a drinks reception with finger food before the event.
Burglary on Ballygaddy Road
Gardaí are investigating the break-in of a shed on Ballygaddy Road in Tuam, on Tuesday night, April 26.
A number of items were stolen, including a blue Forme Longcliffe bicycle, a grey Trek FX bicycle, a Draper cordless drill, two maroon Irish Fly Fishing rods, a set of spanners, and a red-and-black pickaxe.
Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity around the Ballygaddy Road area on Tuesday 26, or has been offered any of these items for sale, is asked to contact the Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840, where Garda Mark Shine is investigating this incident.
Understanding gravity with the help of Galway Astronomy Club
In 1610 Galileo stood on a balcony in Venice surrounded by Venetian noblemen and demonstrated to them the workings of a wondrous new invention; the telescope. The event marked the beginning of a voyage of discovery into previously unknown areas of the universe that culminated in today’s Hubble Space Telescope. An announcement was made at the beginning of 2016 that many scientists feel represents the modern equivalent of this momentous event; the discovery of Gravitational Waves.
This elusive phenomenon was predicted by Albert Einstein over 100 years ago, but had so far evaded all attempts at detection. Their eventual discovery was the result of exquisite technological sophistication, rigorous scientific discipline and thousands of hours of hard work. But what’s all the fuss about? What are the scientific community so excited about this discovery? For its concluding talk of the current season Galway Astronomy Club will offer an easy to understand, lay person’s overview of this topic. The talk will explain what Gravitational Waves are, how they were discovered and, perhaps most importantly of all, why the discovery is so important.
The speaker at the event in the Westwood House Hotel on Monday next May 8 is Brian MacGabhann, Chair of the Galway Astronomy Club, and co-founder and resident lecturer of the Renmore History Society. It starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
