I, Malvolio - another perspective on Twelfth Night

"I'LL BE reveng’d on the whole pack of you," declares Malvolio - a dour man whose mistaken interpretation of a love letter spells his ruin - at the end of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and actor Tim Crouch is here to defend what's left of Malvolio's reputation.

I, Malvolio performed and written by Tim Crouch, comes to the Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday May 9 at 8pm. It has been called "a downright joyous celebration of theatre" by The Guardian, and "fresh, funny, poignant and thought-provoking" by The Daily Telegraph.

A charged and often unsettling rant from a man “notoriously wronged”, a man adrift in front of cruel spectators, I, Malvolio is Twelfth Night from the loser’s perspective. In a story of lost dignity, prudery, practical jokes, and bullying, Malvolio draws his audience into the madness of Shakespeare's play and makes it his own.

I, Malvolio is the fourth solo Shakespeare plays for young audiences from the award winning actor Crouch. “I’ve been a bit obsessed with Malvolio since I played him in a production of Twelfth Night in New York in 2001," he says Crouch. "As a character he resonates around ideas of order and anarchy, the vulnerability of love, the tragic consequences of self-delusion. I like the irony that he is a theatre-hating puritan stuck inside a play, prone to all the random chaos an audience can inflict on a performer."

The show is suitable for audiences aged 11 and over. Tickets are available from the Town Hall (091 - 569777, www.tht.ie ).
