Calamity Jane is coming to the Town Hall

THE FIRST Lady of the Wild West, Calamity Jane, will be celebrated in Galway next month when The Patrician Musical Society stage Calamity Jane in the Town Hall Theatre.

Calamity Jane will run from March 10 to 14 nightly at 8pm. It will star Hildegarde Naughton (Calamity Jane ), Dan Packard (Wild Bill Hickok ), Louise Colohan (Katie ), Liam Brennan (Danny Gilmartin ), and James Harris (Francis Fryer ).

The director is Peter Kennedy and musical direction is from John Roe.

Calamity Jane was born Martha Jane Cannery Burke in 1852 in Missouri. She moved to Dakota, during the gold rush where, she met Wild Bill Hickok. She nursed victims of smallpox epidemic of 1878 and was the only white person befriended by the Sioux Indians.

Calamity Jane later appeared in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, displaying her riding and shooting skills. Her chronic drunkenness and fighting led to her being fired in 1901. She retired to Deadwood, where she died of pneumonia. She was buried next to Wild Bill Hickok.
