SYBIL FAWLTY may have witheringly dismissed Brahms' Symphony No 3 in F Op 90 as "that racket" when she heard Basil playing a tape of it in Fawlty Towers, but Galway is about to hear why it is anything but.
The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, under conductor Daniel Cohen, along with virtuoso violinist Vadim Gluzman, will perform Brahms' 'Third Racket' - as a horrified Basil put it in the aftermath of his wife's put-down - in Leisureland, Salthill, on Thursday April 27 at 8pm.
The programme will also include Dubliner John Kinsella’s 'Elegy For Strings' and Russian Sofia Gubaidulina’s searching, soaring violin concerto 'Offertorium'.
Daniel Cohen is in his second year as kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and this season will conduct performances there of Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni. Cohen also works with the New Israeli Opera, the Dresdner Philharmonie, Helsinki Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Berlin, and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, as well as a return to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic, and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale.
The concert is sponsored by Stewart Construction. Tickets are €22.50/18/10 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, www.musicforgalway.ie ), and Opus II, High Street.
