Developments at Connemara piers will 'provide local employment' says Kyne

Grant totalling €300,000 in funding for work at three piers

Three piers in Connemara - Roundstone Pier, Bealcarra Pier near Carna, and Crumpan Pier, near Maínis - are to get a total of €300,000 towards development and repair projects.

The funding, which is part of €2.8 million national programme of support projects being undertaken by local authorities, provides 75 per cent of the cost of improvements and repairs to piers and harbours being undertaken by the Galway County Council. A total of €112,500 will go towards extending Bealcarra Pier; another €112,500 will be used for slipway and pier infrastructure at Crumpan Pier; and €75,000 will go towards repairing structural damage at Roundstone Pier.

The funding has been welcomed by Seán Kyne, the Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources, and Fine Gael TD for Galway West. "The funding to these projects is important for local coastal communities," he said, "as it enhances facilities for those in fisheries as well as for marine leisure. Furthermore, the projects will provide local employment and I look forward to Galway County Council starting work as soon as possible."
