FROM AWARD winning thrillers, to examinations of modern Japanese youth, to a film about the most famous Japanese metal band you have never heard of - the ninth annual Japanese Film Festival has it all.
The festival is currently touring Ireland and comes to the Eye Cinema, Wellpark, from Sunday April 2 to Thursday 6, screening six films, almost all of which are Irish premieres.
The programme includes Koji Fukada’s thriller Harmonium, which won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Anime fans can look forward to a double bill of Kizumonogatari Parts I and II, the series of animated youth horror films directed by Tatsuya Oishi.
Among the other films being shown are the crowd-pleasing Her Love Boils Bathwater, which picked up three prizes at the recent Japanese Academy Awards; Nagasaki: Memories of My Son, a very personal film from director Yoji Yamada, which was also Japan’s official submission to this year’s Oscars; Japanese Girls Never Die, which examins modern Japanese youth; and We Are X, telling the extraordinary story of X JAPAN, a successful and iconic Japanese metal band, who are not widely known elsewhere.
