Ballybane break-in investigated
Gardai are investigating a break in to a house in Ballybane last weekend.
Between the hours of 10am on St Patrick’s Day and 8am on Sunday 19, a house in Ard Alainn, Ballybane was broken into.
Entry was gained by intruders through the rear window which was removed from its frame.
Gardai said that fortunately nothing appears to have been taken by the intruders.
Anyone who may have observed anyone acting suspiciously in the area on those dates or who may have information is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000
Mountbellew Walled Garden chosen for Adopt a Monument Scheme
Mountbellew Walled Garden is among seven new sites chosen to take part in the 2017 Adopt a Monument Scheme run by the Heritage Council.
The extensive eighteenth century walled garden was once part of the large Bellew estate.
The Mountbellew Heritage and Tourism Network want to conserve the large limestone walls that surround the gardens, and to restore some of the original features of the gardens and to establish allotments to help people to discover the heritage of the locality and to provide opportunities for employment and tourism in the region.
The seven sites chosen for 2017 will benefit from extensive training, mentoring and specialist advice.
The Adopt a Monument Scheme offers communities expertise, mentoring and support to help them to care for their local heritage, work collaboratively to develop and understand the story of their locality. The Scheme first began in 2016 with six community groups ‘adopting’ their local monuments, with mentoring, training and specialist expertise provided by the Heritage Council and experts from Abarta Heritage.
Thief stole bike from lamppost
Gardai are appealing for information on a bike which was stolen from the city centre last week.
The thief stole the white Carraro mountain bike between the hours of 2.30pm on March 15 and 5.30pm on March 16.
The owner had secured it with a lock and chain to a lamppost on Domnick Street.
Anyone who may have information in relation to the whereabouts of this bicycle is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091 538000.
Pruning and woodturning workshops in Ballinfoile
The Cumann na bhFear (Men’s Shed ) and Ballinfoile Mór Community Organic Garden are working together to provide a monthly series of educational crafts and environmental workshops, with the first two events taking place later this month.
This Saturday, March 25, a two-hour fruit trees pruning workshop will be mentored by Kay Synott at 11.15am in the Ballinfoile Mór Community Organic Garden. Though the workshop is free, participants in return are asked to volunteer to help out in a Galway city community garden for two weekly sessions
At 7pm on Wednesday March 29, a workshop entitled ‘Woodturning and how to make your very own stylish pens’ will take place in Cumann na bhFear premises in Unit 1B, Sandy Road Business Park.
The tutors are Tom O’Connell and Kevin McLernon. The fee is €20.
