Waiting lists will rise unless replacement dental nurse are appointed

Waiting lists will increase if replacement dental nurses are not appointed to fill vacancies created by staff retiring from these positions, a county councillor has warned.

Fianna Fail politician Mary Hoade stated that a number of dental nurses in Galway have retired and others are due to retire.

Addressing a meeting of the HSE West’s regional health forum at Merlin Park Hospital, she asked what was the current situation regarding the replacement of these nurses.

Tony Canavan, the chief officer for community services, outlined there were currently four vacancies in the Galway area for dental nurses.

“These vacancies are with the national primary care office for approval for replacement,” he said. “They have been signed off locally.”

He added that as vacant posts arise they have to be considered in the context of delivery of service plan targets and affordability.
