The Galway senior hurlers went to Tralee last weekend and defeated the home side on a score-line of 1-22 to 0-12 to reach the quarter-finals of the national league.
Galway only led by three points at half time, with Padraig Brehony's goal the difference between the sides at the small whistle.
However, following Wexford's win last weekend, it will be Davy Fitzgerald's newly adopted county that will play in division 1A next season, while Galway will remain in 1B for at least another season.
On the positive side of the Galway hurling ledger, last Sunday was significant in one regard, as it saw former All-Star Joe Canning make his first start since his serious hamstring injury in last year's All-Ireland semi-final joust with Tipperary.
It was good to see Canning back for the full 70 minutes and the Portumna player posted nine points, three of them from open play. He also hit a goal in the second half that was not allowed as the umpires bizarrely neglected to notice it hitting the inside post before rebounding back into play.
Cathal Mannion was Michael Donoghue’s other top scoring forward with five points from play in a solid performance.
Galway outscored the home side by 0-15 to 0-5 in the second-half to win with ease in the last quarter.
