Championship opens for U21 footballers

The Galway U21 footballers are down to play Leitrim in the 2017 Championship this Saturday in Tuam Stadium (3pm ).

The management team led by Gerry Fahy, includes Barry Cullinane, Val Daly, Tomás Mannion and Ciaran O'Fatharta, and they have a core group of talented footballers on the panel.

Players such as Michael Daly, Peter Cooke, Sean Kelly, Kieran Molloy, Paul Mannion and Rory Greene have all seen plenty of senior action with their clubs over the past few years, and they should be well able to compete and dominate their positions at U21 level.

Senior panellist and former minor star Cillian McDaid is also available for selection.

Some of last year's county minors who advanced to the All-Ireland final against Kerry, such as Robert Finnerty, Dessie Conneely, Céin Darcy, John Maher and Cormac Haslam, are also involved this weekend, and if most of those Galway players perform to the level of which they are capable, they should be good enough to defeat Leitrim and set up a Connacht semi-final clash with Mayo.

This is the last year of intercounty U21 football before it is re-graded to U20 in 2018, so Galway will be keen to produce a good run in the championship and see where they end up.

There is a county minor league game fixed as a curtain raiser (1pm ) for Tuam too, but with the current level of rainfall that may not go ahead at the same venue.
