Prefabs to be considered as wards in Merlin Park to ease crisis

Prefabs may be located on the Merlin Park site as a short term measure to deal with the ongoing overcrowding problem at University Hospital Galway.

The proposal for these temporary structures is to be rolled out in a national bid to ease the crisis. They will be used as wards and the plan envisages that patients who have had surgery but are not particularly unwell will be accommodated in these units.

Cllr Padraig Conneely raised the issue of the modular buildings at a meeting of the HSE West’s regional health forum at Merlin Park Hospital on Tuesday.

He said he read in the papers that they were earmarked for Galway as a means of easing the pressure on UHG.

Ann Cosgrove, the chief operating officer of the Saolta University Health Care Group, outlined that there were not any plans for these buildings at UHG.
