NUIG students to stage rarely seen play Machinal

University's O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance to stage first production

NUI GALWAY'S O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance is about to stage its first production, the classic 1928 American expressionist drama Machinal, by Sophie Treadwell.

Inspired by true events, Machinal follows a young woman suffocated by a restrictive, unfeeling, machine-like society. Produced and performed by undergraduates of drama and theatre studies at NUIG, and directed by Ian R Walsh, a lecturer in drama and theatre studies at the university, the show has been updated to reflect the technology-saturated state of contemporary society.

"Machinal is a famous but rarely seen play that will showcase the best of our facilities and our students’ talents," said Patrick Lonergan, professor of drama and theatre studies at NUIGalway. “We are staging four new productions this year with our students, two written by women and two written by men – with further details to be announced in the months ahead."

Machinal runs from Wednesday March 1 to Friday 3 at 8pm with a special Saturday matinee on March 4 at 3pm. Tickets are €5 from the SocsBox, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUIG or 091 - 492852.
