Galway intermediate hurling champions Ahascragh/Fohenagh will bid to become the first team from Galway to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Final this Saturday when they take on Carrickshock (Kilkenny ) in Croke Park (4.45pm ).
With 24 senior clubs in Galway, it is difficult for a Galway club to win the intermediate title when they face counties which do not have as many senior teams in their club championship.
Carrickshock are very experienced and boast a few players with All-Ireland senior medals, such as Michael Rice, John Tennyson and the Power clan, and they are the bookies' favourites at 8/11, with the Galway side available at 13/10.
If Ahascragh/Fohenagh are to take down the Kilkenny and Leinster champions, they will need their key sharp-shooter Cathal Mannion to maintain the stunning form he displayed in their semi-final win over Lismore (Waterford ) when he shot 0-12 (8fs ) of his side's 1-17.
His brother Padráig was also in tremendous form in that win at centre-back, and both county players will need to be the foundation blocks of what would be a magnificent victory if they can get over the line in two days time.
