Footballers collect two important points

The Galway footballers are in good form as they head into a "mini-break" in the league after an impressive 1-13 to 0-10 victory over Fermanagh in Brewster Park on Sunday.

Kevin Walsh's team will face Clare on Sunday week at home (February 26 ), and after last weekend's win there will be a belief in the squad. Another two league points can be collected if they produce 70 minutes of football similar to the second 35 minutes last weekend.

At half time the home side were leading by 0-7 to 0-3, but Galway came out in the second half and outscored them by 1-10 to 0-3 with top notch performances by midfielder Paul Conroy and Damien Comer, who hit 1-2 from play.

Youngsters Michael Daly, who scored 0-3 from play, and his clubmate Barry McHugh, who notched 0-4 (4fs ), also caught the eye.

While it is great to have a consistent and reliable free-taker on the pitch, and McHugh genuinely fits that bill, he will need to produce a bit more in general play as the season progresses.

Team manager Kevin Walsh was understandably pleased with the win.

"Brewster Park is a hard place to come to and we knew we had a huge battle on our hands. We had put ourselves under pressure in the first half, but the lads really put their shoulder to wheel and dug themselves out of a bit of a hole.

"To be fair to them, they stuck to the process. And it is important that they are learning as they go along. It is still only the second league game of the year and we want to get ourselves into a position where we are able to challenge more often, and be competitive on a more consistent basis."

Experienced midfielder Paul Conroy was not happy with the team's first-half performance, but at least there was a significant improvement in the second period.

"It is something we definitely need to work on as regards being more consistent for the full 70 minutes. We got the perfect start in the first minute of the second half when Damien [Comer] took his goal very well. Hopefully we can produce a good performance and get a result the next day against Clare too."

Kildare top of the table

Elsewhere in division two, Kildare continued their winning ways with an impressive 1-14 to 1-08 win over Cork in Newbridge.

The Lilywhites under Cian O'Neill have made the perfect start in their attempt to progress from divisions three to one in successive seasons. They have won their first two games by a total of 16 points against Meath and Cork respectively.

They will face Galway in round seven of the league on April 2 in what could potentially be a crucial game to see who plays where in 2018.
