STEPHEN G ELLIS, professor of history at NUI Galway, and an expert on Tudor Ireland, is to be honoured with the launch of a new book of essays covering the period from late medieval to early modern Ireland.
Frontiers, states and identity in early modern Ireland and beyond - Essays in honour of Steven G Ellis, edited by Christopher Maginn and Gerald Power, and published by Four Courts Press, will be launched in The Moore Institute, NUIG, at 5pm on Monday February 20. The guest speaker will be Prof Ciaran Brady of Trinity College Dublin.
Ellis's scholarship, and his pioneering work on Tudor Ireland and the interaction and mutual impact on the histories of Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales, on each other, provides inspiration and coherence to this collection, which now only explores Irish history, but also includes subjects on the Netherlands and Iceland. Among the contributors are Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Christopher Maginn, and Gerald Power.
Prof Ellis read history at Manchester University before working at the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University, Belfast. He joined the History Department in Galway in 1976, was awarded a personal chair in 1991, and was appointed to the established chair of History in 2009. He served as Head of History from 2004 to 2011, and is currently head of the School of Humanities.
