Running of city playgrounds ‘farcical’ says Crowe

Playgrounds in Bohermore and Salthill which have been closed for more than months, is “an incredible waste of a community resource”, according to a city councillor who said the running of city playgrounds is “farcical”.

Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Ollie Crowe has criticised the Galway City Council, accusing it of “not spending the budget allocated to playgrounds in 2016”, and he further alleged there are, “serious questions over the administration of the scheme”.

He said, in addition to the Bohermore and Salthill playgrounds, there are other playgrounds in the city in “desperate need of repair”. Cllr Crowe is now calling for the €150,000 for the upkeep of playgrounds in the 2017 budget, to be “fully spent”.

He is also calling on the local authority to “come up with a realistic plan” for raising all 23 of the parks across the city to acceptable standards, and for a schedule of works to be drawn up to prioritise “those with the most urgent issues”.
